The Garage; The Forgotten Room

Garages have a way of becoming the “forgotten room.” You know, the one we promise ourselves we’ll get to… next weekend. Or after the holidays. Or maybe once it cools down.

Before we know it, it’s been years, and the garage has quietly transformed into a catch-all space for everything we didn’t know what to do with—holiday bins, unopened boxes from a past move, broken tools, and kids’ gear from five years ago.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In fact, most of our clients tell us the garage is the most intimidating space in their entire home. And it’s easy to see why.

🧠 Why it happens?

  • It’s not a living space – easy to ignore

  • It holds our indecision – toss it? donate it? …nah

  • It's emotionally charged – Sentimental boxes, half finished projects

  • There’s often no system – piles, not plans

😩 Why it feels so overwhelming?

“You open that door, take one look, and your brain says: ‘Nope. Not today.”

But here's the truth: You don’t have to do it all at once. And you don’t have to do it alone.

🛠️ How to Get Started (And Not Burn Out)?

We recommend the Corner Strategy—a simple, non-intimidating way to begin:

“You don’t have to organize your garage in a day. You just need to start with one corner.” Start with this simple guide

  • Pick One Corner. Don’t look at the whole space. Just focus on one wall or section.

  • Set a timer. 30-45 minutes is plenty

  • Group Like Items. Start gathering tools, holiday décor, keepsakes, sports gear, trash etc.

  • Create separate zones/bins.

    • Toss. Ask: Do I use it? Is it broken?

    • Donate. Would someone else benefit more from this?

    • “Keep. But don’t just put things back—make a plan. Think bins, labels, hooks.

  • Celebrate. Small wins add up to success.

  • Repeat next weekend. You’re not behind—you’re just pacing yourself right.
